Mary is the daughter of John and Barbara McDougall of Kilmeny Parish, Islay, Argyll, Scotland. She Married Alexander McNiven in 1832. Their first 5 children were born in Scotland. Aprox. 1846, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Erin, Wellington, Ontario. 4 more children were born to them. During this time the spelling of the surname changed to McNevin.

In 1865, Alexander, his family and his sister Jane and her family moved on to Burnside, Lapeer, Michigan. About 1900, the surname spelling changed to McNeven. Alexander was a farmer.
