FLIPPEN DOROTHY EXALL
Dallas Morning News, The (TX) — Monday, February 24, 2003
FLIPPEN, DOROTHY EXALL, was born in Dallas on January 6, 1923 and died peacefully in Dallas after a long illness on February 21, 2003. She was a member of the Exall family who had lived in Dallas for several generations. Her grandmother founded both the Dallas Public Library, the Dallas Women's Club and the Shakespeare Club. She was married for 60 years to Newton G. Flippen, Jr. whose father founded one of the first Ford dealerships in Dallas. Dorothy graduated from Hockaday School, attended Hollins College in Virginia and the University of Texas at Austin. During World War II, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she assisted the Colonel in charge of the Army unit. One of the greatest stories told during that time is that on Dorothy's first date with Lt. Newton G. Flippen, he invited her to play pool at the base commissary. Although pool was his specialty, she proceeded to run the table, telling him afterwards that her father won the Southwestern Championship! Lieutenant Flippen, soon to become Captain in the Air Force, was also from Dallas and they quickly learned that their parents were longtime friends. They were married in 1943. In Dallas, Dorothy was a longtime reader at St. Rita's Catholic Church. She had joined Kappa Alpha Theta in college and was active throughout most of her life. She was a member of The Junior League and wrote a play called, "Pinky and the Haunted House" for their puppets. She participated in numerous social and civic organizations including the Dallas Women's Club and Shakespeare Club, in which she served as President. She loved tennis and walked a brisk three miles daily for years. She and her husband were excellent dancers and were members of several dance clubs, including San Jose, Calliope and Carousel. Her friends spoke of her sense of humor and lightening fast wit! She is preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy Flippen Oliver and survived by her husband, Newton G. Flippen, Jr.; daughters, Barry O'Brien and Dorothy Bussa; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren. She will be truly missed. Services 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at St. Rita's Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Road, Dallas. Interment Oakland Cemetery, Dallas.
