Mathew served in Company F (Salem, VA) 2nd Reg. of the confederate army, also known as "the cradle and grave fellows" (he was one of the grave fellows). And he fought in the battle at Hanging Rock.

He was the son of Thomas L. and Mary West Bandy and the grandson of Richard and Nancy Lewellen Bandy. Mathew was also the great grandson of Thomas Bandy, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

His children were : Cynthia Florentine Bandy Goodwin, Amanda Maria Bandy Goodwin Harper, Martha "Pattie" C. A. Bandy Lavinder, Isaac T. Bandy, Laura J. M. Bandy and Icy Medora Bandy Harper.

Mathew and his wife took in many family members in need at different times. And their home was the location for several weddings.

He and his wife also donated the land for the Cedar Grove Methodist Church to be built on in 1875. Many years later, in 1918, this same community moved down the road to the then newly built Goodwin Memorial Methodist Church (land donated by Luther B. Goodwin, Mathew's grandson). This new church is still active today.
