Jeremiah served in the Civil War as a Private in
Co. K 37th IA Inf. 18 Sept 1862, discharged 24 May 1865.

He married Jane (Rochford) on 6 Dec 1828, they had 8 children:

OBIT
Mr. Jeremiah Smith, a well known farmer residing three and a half miles southwest of Camanche, on the Wapsie, died suddenly of heart disease Sunday morning, being found dead in his bed. He was 72 years of age and leaves a wife and children, Mr. William Smith, the Clinton marble dealer, being a son. The funeral occurred at ten o'clock Tuesday.
