Melissa was the daughter of Philip & Kezia (Curtis) Young & she grew up on a family farm in Franklin Township, Shelby County, OH. On April 22, 1852, Melissa was married to Alfred Ailes, said ceremony having been conducted in Shelby County by local justice of the peace Valentine McCormick. Melissa & Alfred first lived on a family farm in Franklin Township but eventually moved to Jackson Township. On the 1910 Federal Census, Melissa, who was then living in the Jackson Township household of son Hiram, stated that she (and Alfred) had parented five children, three of whom were still living. The living children were Hiram P. Ailes, John F. Ailes, & Ethan Dewitt Ailes. The deceased children were May A. Ailes & Philip Ailes.
