Joseph Mercer was born in Galia county, Ohio, November 10, 1821. On March 12, 1857, he was married to Miss Rhoda Green, in Van Buren county, Iowa, to which state he had removed some years previous. Later he removed to Wisconsin, and when the civil war broke out he enlisted in the army, serving with Co. C, 45th Wisconsin Volunteers, throughout the war. From Wisconsin he removed to Nebraska, afterwards locating at Buffalo, Kansas, and for the past twelve years has been a resident of Humboldt, Kansas, where he died on March 31, 1906, aged 84 years, 2 months and 21 days.

Seven children survive him, two sons and five daughters. They are: Joseph A. Mercer of Independence, Kansas; Mrs. Andreas J. Blume of Buffalo, Kansas, Mrs. Ed. White, of Fort Scott, Kansas, Mrs. George Fox Jr., of Chanute, Mrs. Rodney B. Redfield, Mrs. O.D. Jenkins and Orlie Mercer, of Humboldt, Kansas.

The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Buffalo, April 2, 1906 reposing by the side of his wife who died September 28, 1903.
