Joseph Benton was the son of John and Obalonia (Nidal) Benton. Both of his parents were born in Bavaria, Germany. He was born July 24, 1852 in New York City, New York.
MILITARY RECORD:
Enlisted as a Private on January 5, 1877 in Baltimore, Maryland. Assigned to Company "C", 2nd U.S. Cavalry. Discharged on January 4, 1882 at Sinaboine, Montana. A pension was awarded on Certificate No. 7713.
He married Emma Schmidt on January 8, 1881 in Montana. He was the father of four children, John of Wenatchee; Mrs. Anna Atkins, Joseph Benton; and Mrs. Elizabeth Carr, all of Spokane. He lived in Spokane County and had been in the state since 1884. At the age of 76 years in October 1928, he was admitted to the Washington Veterans' Home.
