HAMPTON - Ms. Nell Smith of Hampton passed into eternal life on Sunday, April 12, 2009, following a brief illness.

She was born in Oxford, N.C. on May 11, 1930, where she was reared by her aunt, Eliza Prince. Early in her life she moved to Newport News where she graduated from Huntington High School in 1947.

In 1958, she graduated from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College with a degree in Nursing. She became certified as a Registered Nurse by the American Nursing Association. As an employee of the Veterans Administration, she served in hospitals in Richmond, Virginia and New Jersey.

In 1978 she returned to Newport News where she worked in the emergency room of the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Hampton. There she received numerous awards and commendations for her dedicated service. She retired in 1990.

She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed some of her happiest moments on her summer outings on the Chesapeake Bay. Nell will always be fondly remembered by all who attended her gala, annual New Year's Day gatherings at her home. She was an active member of the Red Hatters.
She was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, where she served as a member of the Vestry, the Pastoral Care Committee, and the Episcopal Church Women. She was also the President of the Progressive Women's Club, and served as a Lay Reader.

She leaves to mourn her passing two cousins, Gary Hutcheson of East Orange, N.J., and Isaiah Speight of Portsmouth; friends, Sheila Hobson of Piscataway, N.J., Janice Scott and Juanita Grant, both of Hampton, and Rosa Terry and Luvella Bryant, both of Newport News; her Progressive Women's Club and St. Augustine's Church families; and a host of fishing buddies and other friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 2515 Marshall Avenue, Newport News.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church Capital Fund. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
