Fulton County 4-H leader Walt CUMBERLAND, 67, died Sunday at his 4061 E. Fulton County Road 350 South home. He was a 4-H leader, and longtime Rochester High School volunteer Cumberland was involved with the 4-H program for 27 years, most of them in Fulton County. He started a club at Beaver Dam then moved to Rochester, where he was a Woodrow Sodbusters leader. He was the beef superintendent and on the 4-H Council for 18 years and served on various other committees. He had resigned from the beef superintendent position but was still on the community building committee and helped with foods judging the last four or five years, said Extension Educator Melva STAMBARGER. "He was a very friendly, wonderful person. He was always there for the kids," she said. "He was a 4-H mainstay. He went the extra mile." Cumberland was the Sodbusters leader all 10 years Tina FORD participated in 4-H. "He was just a wonderful guy. It was his life, being involved with 4-H and helping the kids," said Ford, of Alexandria. Jane SHRIVER was a co-leader with Cumberland for years. "He was a man that cared about all the kids. When we had the beef barn it was for all of the little kids. Even through his working in the schools, he enjoyed being around the kids," she said. Cumberland was an avid sports fan and took tickets at Rochester High School athletic events for about 10 years. In recent years he also could be found sitting at a table throughout December wrapping toys for the United Ministries Christmas baskets, where he chuckled and joked with other volunteers. Arrangements are pending at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.
