Fay-Cooper Cole attended Northwestern University and Columbia University. He studied various Philippine and Indonesian tribes and published several books on the subject.

Fay-Cooper Cole also did anthropological studies in Illinois and the Midwest. Cole Hall at Northern Illinois University, site of the shootings on February 14, 2008, was named for him.
