Arne Lawrence Bundgaard, 83, of Bruce died April 20. Funeral services were Thursday afternoon at Nathaniel Lutheran Church in Bruce, with the Rev. Larry Sturgis officiating. Military rites were accorded by Weyerhaeuser Veterans of Foreign Wars and burial at a later date in the Bruce Cemetery

Mr. Bundgaard was born Oct. 2, 1925 to Lawrence and Anna Marie (Jensen) Bundgaard in Blair, Neb. He entered the Navy after high school and served from July 8, 1943 to April 8, 1946. He participated in D-Day assaults in the Marianas and Okinawa.

He married Beverly Girard on April 25, 1953 in St. Croix Falls. He lived in the Town of Thornapple for the past 40 years. He worked for 8 years in auto sales, 17 years in consumer finance and for 17 1/2 years with North Central Life Insurance Co. He was a member of the Weyerhaeuser VFW. He enjoyed watching the Packers, listening to the Brewers, golfing, playing cribbage, mowing the lawn, going for Sunday drives, playing board games and telling jokes.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Sandra Keiser of San Jose, Calif., and Susan Szuster of Valparaiso, Ind.; four sons, Lawrence of Rice Lake, Brad of Osceola, Bob of Weyerhaeuser and Van of Bruce; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Axel of Burnsville, Minn., and Vic of Greensboro, N.C.

He had one sister, Agnes Nielsen, who preceded him in death in 1987; a brother ,Carl, who died in the Panama Canal while serving in the U.S. Air Force; and a son, Thomas Carl, who died in 2000.

Arne Lawrence Bundgaard passed on to eternity Monday, April 20, 2009. Arne lived a good and long life and contributed to his family, church, community and to so many people he encountered throughout his many years on this Earth.

Arne was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Blair, Neb., to Lawrence Christensen and Anna Marie (Jensen) Bundgaard, both immigrants from Denmark, who preceded him in death. He had one sister, Agnes Nielsen, who preceded him in death in 1987; a brother ,Carl, who died in the Panama Canal while serving in the U.S. Air Force; and a son, Thomas Carl, who died in 2000.

Arne and Beverly Girard married April 25, 1953, in St. Croix Falls. His family home has been in the town of Thornapple, near Bruce, for the past 40 years. Arne is survived by his wife, Beverly; sons, Lawrence (Dana) of Rice Lake, Brad of Osceola, Bob (Becky) of Weyerhaeuser and Van of Bruce; daughters, Sandra (Fred Keiser) of San Jose, Calif., and Susan (Mark Szuster) of Valparaiso, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Jason, Robert, Justine, Kyle, Tera, Erica, Luke, Ashley, Avery, Brent and Aaron; four great-grandchildren, Lyric, Zevan, Caydence and Cameron; a sister-in-law, Carol Jean Thomas of Ladysmith; a brother-in-law, Jim (Joyce) Girard of Eau Claire; and two brothers, Axel (Ann) of Burnsville, Minn., and Vic (Sandra) of Greensboro, N.C. His family is extensive, and he cared about everyone.

As an adult he spent eight years working in auto sales and 17 years in the consumer finance business; until retirement he was with North Central Life Insurance Co. for 17 1/2 years with a territory of the western half of Wisconsin. Arne loved to play golf, and he enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, listening to the Milwaukee Brewers and golf tournaments. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his wife, mowing his lawn and going for Sunday afternoon drives.

He loved his family, and he enjoyed it when his grown children would come home for visits with their spouses and children. He loved to play board games with them and tell corny jokes. He was a friend to many and would seek out his neighbors just to have conversation. Arne was a member of Nathaniel Lutheran Church in Bruce and Weyerhaeuser VFW.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Nathaniel Lutheran Church, Bruce, with the Rev. Larry Sturgis officiating. Military burial rites will be provided by Weyerhaeuser VFW following the funeral. Interment of ashes will be at a later date in Bruce Cemetery.

Arne's family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of services.
