He was a messenger for Well-Fargo and with Frank Porter was to lead a mule train loaded with gold to Globe. Cicero Grimes, his brother Lafayette, and Curtis B Hawley were aware of this and planned to rob the train. Their plans were to make Andy and Frank think they were being attacked by Apaches and flee the scenes. The bandits opened fire from ambush and killed the mule carrying the gold. The other mules stampeded and knocked Andy from his horse. Frank ran to Globe for help. The bandits rushed to the gold box, broke it open and placed the gold in their canvas bags and fled the scene. Andy walked back to the scene still not knowing if it was Indians or white men. He started to follow the bandits and when he stopped at a spring because he became tired and thirsty the robbers found him and shot him repeatedly. Because Lafayette Grimes was only about five feet tall and wore a size 5 boot an alert posse member recognized the tracks he left and the bandits were soon apprehended.

Hall was also well known because with Major John Wesley Powell and eight other men, he was the first to make the trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
