Obituary from The Montana Standard:

Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Jose Johns died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Beyond Home Assisted Living in Butte.

Bessie was born in San Francisco, on Oct. 29, 1906, to Almond Jose, native of Cornwall, England, and Jenet John, native of Swansea, Wales. They moved to Butte in 1912.

Bessie received her schooling at the Franklin, Jefferson, Grant and Washington elementary schools. She worked in Symon's Dry Goods Store on Park Street. With her bonnet and tambourine, she was a girl guard for the Salvation Army.

She married William R. Johns on March 9, 1927.

He died on May 31, 1981. They had three daughters.

Mom was a Camp Fire girl, a member of the Senior Citizens Club, past president of the Marion White Arts and Crafts, the Butte Pioneer Club, the Home Atherton Garden Club, Arco and past-president of the East Side Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

She enjoyed her painting, pastels, fishing, camping, knitting, crocheting, quilting, gardening and sewing. She especially loved to dance.

Mom was a quiet and loving person. She carried enduring names as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

She traveled extensively, including to the Panama Canal, all 50 states, and to Europe. Her last trip, at the age of 95, was made to Sweden.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, four brothers, and one sister.

She is survived by her sister, Jenny Sullivan; daughters and husbands, Betty and Bob Helstrom and Bonny and Milo Hemmert, of Butte, and Barbara and Darwin Davis of Riverton, Utah; 11 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
