Searching for his wife's, Mary Fenley/Finley Pettit, resting place. She may have been left in Texas close to her daughter, Ascenath Pettit Pruitt or possible in Alabama prior to the family migrating to Texas and then settling in Arkansas.

"I noticed that you had posted a picture of the cemetary where Ashford is supposed to be buried. Can you confirm that his headstone is in that cemetery?"

My reply:
Yes I can. In the Cemeteries of Van Buren County book, he is listed as being near the end of row 10 at Hardin Cemetery. He is listed as A. Pettit, but that is him.

I don't know about the church, no church there now, but I know several cemeteries in the county that did have churches and in some cases, they will put the old church bell on a stand, like at Union Hill Cemetery at Formosa for Instance. I want to say this is so at Hardin as well. But I would have to go and look to be sure.

Warmly,
Dennis Earle

Note from W. Chennault: A distant cousin, Lillian (Holliman) Bell provided a photo of Ashford's granddaughter Cordelia Pettit who died about the same time and is buried in the same cemetery.

Note from W. Chennault: Headstones for Ashford and Cordelia were still intact on 11/05/2018 per great great grandson Doug Pettit. He reports that Cordelia's headstone information is on one side and Ashford's is on the other. Cordelia is Ashford's granddaughter and her parents were Zachariah Taylor Pettit and Mary Ann (Ritter) Pettit.
