I think this is the nickname for son of Wash and Esther Adams, He was listed in the 1880 census with the family. Dorcas name was on the line, scratched and his name in the place of it.
See the census on the page of Joseph Adams died June 7, 1925.

Sept. 2018 Information provided to me via e mail from another contributor:

From several historical documents, it states that Alfred (Alf) Adams was a brother of George Washington Adams and Moses Adams. All were from Yellville, Arkansas.

News clipping furnished by Renee in The Library Center, Local History and Genealogy Department. South Campbell St.

My comment regarding the article.
A very find tribute to what seems to be a wonderful man. The terms used in this is not intended as derogatory it was a description used at the time for skin color.

" A Notable Negro.
Alfred Adams, whose death occurred early Friday morning was an interesting negro character. He was better known in Springfield and throughout the surrounding country than any other member of the ex-slave population of the town. Other negroes have received more of the educational advantages of the era of freedom that this ambitious barber, who came to Springfield at the close of the war, but none excelled Alf Adams in common sense and force of character. He was more than a match for many of his race who had been through the best colored schools of the country.
Alfred Adams, like most of the old ex-slaves, had a strong attachment for the white man of his own period. He knew who was the negro's best friend and never allowed the prejudices excited by the politicians in the porst-bellum times to alienate his friendship for the former owners of the colored people.
As a member of the city council Alf Adams always took especial pride in serving the interests of his white constituents.
The funeral of the old negro tomorrow afternoon will be an event of much interest to the whole colored population of Springfield. It will be conducted by the lodge of negro Masons, which is composed of the best colored men of the city. "
