Daniel Dougherty arrived in the United States from Ireland in 1851. He was a miner at Rose's Bar, Yuba County, California, July 12, 1860 (1860 US Census). Daniel enlisted as a private at Eureka May 30, 1863, and was mustered into Company A, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers, at Fort Humboldt. Private Dougherty was mustered out Ft Humboldt April 25, 1865. Daniel then went to San Francisco where he re-enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company G, 9th U.S. Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco, May 30, 1865. Private Dougherty was mustered out at Crescent City, California, May 30, 1868. After his discharge from military service Daniel remained in California. He was a miner at North Fork in Trinity County, on August 12, 1870 (1870 US Census). Daniel took the oath of U.S. citizenship in Humboldt County August 14, 1871, and the following year he registered to vote at Crescent City on October 12, 1872 (1872 Del Norte Great Register). He was a miner living at Rose's Bar in Yuba County June 5, 1880 (1880 US Census). Daniel was admitted to the Veterans' Home of California at Yountville, Napa County, May 17, 1892. One week later he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension on May 26. He received application No. 1,113,566 and certificate No. 923,638. He registered to vote at the Yountville home September 24, 1894, and again on May 8, 1896 (1894, 1896 Napa Great Register). Daniel was discharged from the Veterans Home of California October 9, 1899, and relocated to Redding in Shasta County, where he worked as a miner for the next two years. He was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle April 24, 1902. Daniel remained at the soldiers' home until his death December 31, 1905. His home record indicated he was 5' 8" talll with a fair complexion, and that he was single with no known next-of-kin.
