Ellen was the daughter of Mitchell (Michel) Duchene, whose family was one of the first French settlers in what became St. Clair County, Michigan. Her mother's name is probably Marie (Mary) Chartier. Ellen married Alexander Laffrey April 4, 1847, in China Township, St. Clair County, Michigan, and spent their lives in and around the City of St. Clair. Ellen and Alex were the parents of Oliver, Mary, Josephine, Nellie, Minnie and Elizabeth. Ellen died in her home and her funeral was held July 11 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Clair.
