Jefferson Davis, third son of James Merritt Davis and Josephine Antonia Turpin, was born Dec. 13, 1878 in Bowman's Bluff(Henderson)NC. He married Leola (Ola) Annabelle Stockard January 11, 1903 in Mertens(Hill)TX; he died Aug.1946 in Waxahachie(Ellis)TX.
He and family lived in Mertens. He had several businesses: hardware and lumber store, cotton gins, etc.
He was mayor of Mertens at one time and a Methodist.
Their children were:
Darrell Merritt, born April 17,1904;Maurine, born May 27, 1906; Wallace Turpin, born July 3,1908;Curnie Meredith, born Nov. 23, 1910; Lois, born Nov. 27 1912; Winnie Jean, born Jan. 31,1915; Hallie Mae(Hal), born Jan. 7,1917; Bernice Marion(Bunk); and Ola Christine( Kik), born Nov. 7,1921.
Jefferson Davis built a beautiful two story home for his family. They were the first family to have indoor plumbing in Mertens; the second family to have an automobile.
His three sons graduated from Texas A&M .His daughters attended college, also.
