FORMER STATE LIBRARIAN DIES IN CALIFORNIA
It was learned here today that Mary W. Harris, former Louisiana State assistant librarian, died last night at her home in Fresno, Calif.
Miss Harris, who would have been 90 next month, moved to her hometown of Fresno after retiring in 1954.
State Library spokesman said Miss Harris organized Louisiana's first regional library, the Tri-Parish Library, serving Jackson, Grant and Winn parishes. She was also head of the State Library's extension department and responsible for the supervision of public libraries as well as technical services for demonstrations.

SHE SERVED LOUISIANA WELL
Thousands of Louisianans who never heard of her benefited yesterday, the day before, or last week, from the sustained energies and great personal dedication of Miss Mary Harris.
She died the other day, at the still awesome age of 90. She had been assistant state librarian in the Louisiana State Library system for a number of years before retiring in 1954 and returning to California.
Miss Harris organized the first regional library in the state, one serving Winn, Grant, and Jackson Parishes. She headed the extension service of the State Library, was responsible, supervisory consultant for public libraries and for technical services for demonstrations.
Miss Harris and her contemporaries in the State Library served Louisiana well, for they were the immediate instrumentalities [sic] in the shaping of the magnificent State Library system Louisiana has today.
