Mrs. Serena Hines (nee Sherard) was born October 15, 1815, in Wayne County, North Carolina. She was married early in life to Hiram Hines, who was a true and faithful husband as long as he lived. Sister Hines was the mother of thirteen children. Five of these are dead. I knew Sister Hines well. Her house was one of the first places I ever visited while but a boy. I loved to visit her home - she was so kind and pleasant to everyone. I loved her next to my own mother. I never met a more noble woman. Her husband died a few years before the late war, leaving her with five or six children in the family. She took his business in her own hands, and managed it as few women could have done. I never saw a more self-sacrificing person than she was. She has treasures laid up in heaven. I have known her to walk for miles to aid the suffering and distressed. She was a devoted mother. Her life was not her own - she spent it for others. She had the spirit of a true Christian. She was an earnest, consecrated member of the M.E. Church South. The last time I saw her I saw she was failing; trouble and anxiety, as I thought, were taking her life. Her children would gladly have taken care of her; but she kept her own house, taking care of her dependent children and grandchildren. A mother in Israel has gone from labor to rest. God grant that her loved ones may meet her in heaven. Sister Hines died February 3, 1885, in Benton County, Mississippi, where she had raised her family.
