BANCROFT
Entered into his rest Friday noon April 3rd. Lester Bancroft aged 82 years. Lester Bancroft was born in New York state Feb.19 1826 and at the age of twenty one came to Beloit, Wis. where he lived ten years. White living in Beloit, Wis. Mr. Bancroft met and married Miss Abby J. Carpenter and to this marriage one child, their son Samuel was born. In May 1857 Mr. Bancroft and his little family came to Minnesota locating in Cannon Falls which was their home continously until his death overtook them. Mrs. Bancroft died in 1890. In 1865 Mr. Bancroft enlisted but did not see active service for in less than 90 days the war was over. Mr. Bancroft was by trade a mason, which trade he followed for many years in politics a life long republican. Mr. Bancroft by his cheerful disposition was greatly beloved by both young and old and by late years when his eye sight has been poor derived a great deal of pleasure from his quiet talks with old friends. Mr. Bancroft is mourned by his on Samuel and grand-daughter Mattie, who when a little girl at her grandmother's death, seeing her grandfather's sadness comforted him by saying "Never mind, grandpa I'll take care of you" and faithfully has she fulfilled her promise. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the old home and were conducted by Rev. T. G. Crump with full military honors. The pall bearers were members of G.A.R. D. Valentine, Wm. Willamson, F.W. Deline, E.L. Clark, G. Morris and Con. Sherd. Music was furnished by Misses Scofield and Schuieb, Messrs Scofield and Moser. The services was largely attended by old friends and neighbors. Those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Harlon and daughter of Red Wing, and Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Pear of St. Paul. Internment in the Cannon Falls cemetery. The entire community sympathize with the bereaved family.
