John enlisted in the 191st Regiment, Ohio Infantry which was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, January and February, 1865. Then moved to Harper's Ferry, W. Va., March 10, 1865. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 1st Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah, March 20. March to Charleston March 21. Transferred to 2nd (Ohio) Brigade, 2nd Provisional Division, March 27. Duty near Charleston till April 4. Operations in the Shenandoah Valley in vicinity of Winchester, Stevenson's Depot and Jordan's Springs, April to August.

John had taken ill, dying on April 2nd of Rubeola, Pneumonia, Pericarditis, & Hydro Thorax and never finished his term. His body was interred at Antietam.

John was born in Ohio, and his enlistment in the 191st Regiment was a second term for him as all the others in the 191st Ohio Regiment, his previous service not noted. He was the husband of Matilda (nee Fossett-Curry) Jones, and the father of Sarah, Eli, Welthy, John R. Jr., Charles, Alexander, Elizabeth Frances, and Franklin Jones of Kentucky. He was also the loving step-father of Nancy Ann Curry-Parsons-Linebaugh, and William Fossett Curry.
