Ada Browning Whittmore was the daughter of Theodore Waddell Whittemore (1857-1890) and Ada Browning (1859-1927). She married Charles Lansing Thorne on October 7, 1905 and had a daughter, Ada Browning Thorne (Hutchins).
Charles was serving in the Panama Canal when he came down with Yellow Fever and died. After her husband's death, Ada ran a Tea House in New York with her good friend Elizabeth "Beth" Hiscox. In 1917, Ada married Guy Osgood Carleton and had three children, Jean (1919), Robert (1921) and Edward (1922).
