The Atchison Champion, Atchison, Kansas, Friday, February 24, 1905.
Charles Higley, a retired farmer and an old resident of Atchison county, died at Effingham last Saturday night. He use to be jailer at the county jail. He was a member of the Second Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War. He once had an encounter with an insane printer, who cut his throat, and Higley would had died but for the timely aid of Dr. D.J. Holland deceased, who happended to be passing by. It is said that Dr. Holland's success in saving Mr. Higley's life at that time was what brought him later prominence as a physician here. The deceased leaves a window and several ground children. The funeral was held from his home at Effingham at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
