EARL McCLURE SMITH

When Earl died, he had been hospitalized at Sawtelle for 7 months and 2 days. The hospital was the Veterans Administration Center's National Military Home and Hospital at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California.

Earl was a veteran of World War 1. He had served as a chief mechanic in the 148th Field Artillery, Battery C, and served in France and Germany. His long letter home while he was serving is attached.

His wife, at the time of his death, was Dora Smith. The couple had lived in the community for five years and six months. His occupation was that of Superintendent of Equipment for a street car and bus company.

According to his death certificate, his remains were cremated. The names of his parents were given as Don Smith and Lucinda Pond. He died as a result of coronary complications.

He was married twice. First in 1908 in Galena, Kansas, at the home of his mother and step-father, to Ruth Ellen, whose name was given as Ella Dyer, daughter of M. Coles, in their marriage notice in the newspaper. Ruth died in 1911. The couple had a son. Edward Archer Smith, was born on June 5, 1909, in Galena, Kansas. He died on August 21, 1957 in San Diego.

His second marriage was to Dora Firestone Engle, in 1920. The marriage was announced in a Galena, Kansas, newspaper:
FORMER GALENA BOY MARRIES IN DENVER
Mrs. E. B. Archer received word Sunday from her son, Earl Smith, announcing his marriage to Miss Dora Engle, in Denver, Colo., on August 18th. They are at home at 1639 Clarkston Ave., in Denver, Colo.

The couple were actually married in Littleton, Arapaho County, Colorado, just nine miles from Denver.

Dora had a son and two daughters by her first husband, Walter Engle. They were Guy William Engle, Roberta Engle Peters, and Lida Engle Parker. Earl and his wife Dora lived in Wichita, Kansas, in 1930, with the children, and his son, and mother and step-father.
