Matilda's mother, Mahe Kanum, was Native American. Her father, George Greenwood, was from Scotland. She married Dexter Clark at 20 and had five children. Their names were Burt, Mabel, George, Lew, and Grace. Matilda died of tuberculosis in 1898.

My great Uncle Burt remembered when she was sick. She had kept the house clean and neat and worried if it wasn't kept that way. She could see out to the living room from her bed. Burt said he would sweep the floor and push everything out of sight so she wouldn't know the room wasn't really as neat as she wanted to be.
