Poseyville News dated May 13, 1927:
Jacob Heckman died rather suddenly at 7:30 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his son Martin J. Heckman north of Stewartsville. He had been up and around the day before though he suffered from asthma, which together with the sorrow over the death of his daughter Mrs. Henry Gardner one week previous, perhaps hastened the end. He had made his home with Mrs. Gardner prior to her death. Mr. Heckman was 90 years of age and bore the distinction of being the oldest Odd Fellow in Posey County. He had been a member of the Stewartsville lodge for sixty eight years. The deceased was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1854, being 17 years of age. His wife died several years ago. The children surviving are Martin J. Heckman, Mrs. P.H. Reynolds, and Mrs. George Norton of Stewartsville, and Mrs. Emma Heuring of Ft. Branch, and a large number of grand children. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Stewartsville Methodist church. The Stewartsville Odd Fellows took charge of the remains after the sermon and laid them to rest in the town's cemetery. Jacob Heckman, son of Peter and Elizabeth Heckman was born in Bavaria, Germany, December 22, 1836 and died May 6, 1927. He came to America when 17 years old and located in Posey County Indiana. He was untied in marriage to Mary Ann Heubner November 17, 1859. To this union eight children were born of which four preceded him to the great beyond. As a citizen of the community nothing needs to be said for his life has been an open book where all might read. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows filling consecutively many of its hightest positions. He also had been a member of the Encampment and Rebeccas.
