Note on birthplace: MADELINE was born on the portion of the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation that is located in north-central North Dakota, mostly in Rolette County.
MADELINE was a Metis woman of the Turtle Mountain, ND and Pembina bands who probably grew up on lands that became the White Earth reservation in MN. Her father JOSEPH'S family, the SAICES, were a family with a long history among the Chippewa/Ojibwe people in the Great Lakes area, according to family history. It is said the SAICE families on the White Earth reservation are descended from JOSEPH and his brother CHARLES.
MADELINE'S first husband, JOHN LAFEUIER, is also listed as a Metis in the Chippewa/Ojibwe allotment records. He lived with her and the children on the White Earth reservation but abandoned them all between the time of the 1900 federal census and the Indian census taken on 1 Sept 1901. According to some oral histories within the families of descendants, some obituaries of JOHN and MADELINE'S children listed Plumondon, Alberta, or Trois Rivieres, Alberta as his residence.
Their known children:
1) Joseph Beno Lafreniere b. abt. 1877
2) Mary Lafreniere Starkey b. abt. 1879 in N. Dakota
3) John Lafreniere b. 1884 d. 1918.
4) John Lafeuier La Freniere b. 1884 (probably the same as #3)
5) Antoine Lafreniere b. 1886
6) Augustin Lafreniere b. 1887
7) Charles Lafreniere b. abt. 1889

9) Aloysius Lafreniere b. abt. 1894
10) William Lafreniere b. abt. 1896
11) Julia Lafreniere abt. 1897
MADELINE later married FRED BETTNER, listed in some records as BITTNER. It is the name BETTNER that is used on her death certificate.
