OBITUARY: Willaim D. Griffin, Underwood, Succumbs After Long Illness.
William D. Griffin, a resident of Underwood since 1953, died Tuesday, February 13, at the age of 60.
Mr. Griffin was for many years a heavy equipment mechanic for the SDS Lumber Co., and was injured while at work in October 1973. He had been bedridden for many years and succumbed at Skyline Hospital.
Mr. Griffin was born in Mossville, Arkansas, August 10, 1918, the son of William and Myra Griffin. As a young man he worked in the Civiliam Conservation Corps and at the outbreak of World War II was disappointed to learn that he could not qualify for military service because of a lung ailment.
He and Flora Hibbard were married July 18, 1941, in Kansas City, Kansas, and made their first home there. They came west to Trout Lake in 1948 and moved to Underwood five years later.
Mr. Griffin loved the outdoors and was a student of nature. He could identify every tree, shrub, or plant in the area covered by SDS operation and knew every road and ladmark intimately.
A man who enjoyed his work and the people he worked with, he regarded himself a member of the SDS "family."
Besides his wife, Flora, of Underwood, he is survived by a daughter, Savannah (Mrs. William) Tremmel of Home Valley; three sons, William J. Hawley of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Vernon H. Griffin, of Battle Ground, Washington, and Preston Eugene Griffin of Bingen, six sisters, Harried Heflin, Nancy Burdett, and Josie Kale, all of Independence, Missouri, Myrtle Ott of Texas, Zettie Wilson pf Chicago, and Tennie Strawhacker of Mossville, Arkansas; and his mother, Mrs. Myra Griffin of Mossville, Arkansas.
At the time of his death he was survived by 11 grandchildren. A twelth, Eric William Griffin, was born at Skline Hospital Sunday, February 15, the son of Preston Griffin of Bingen.
Funeral services were held at Gardner's Funeral Home in White Salmon Friday, February 16, with Mr. Rod Phalen officiating. Interment followed at the White Salmon Cemetery.
