CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND -- William Edward Zapf Sr., 72, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.

Born Jan. 17, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George and Agnes (Hodel) Zapf. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Jean A. (Golden) Zapf; and nine brothers and sisters.

Mr. Zapf was a retired electrical supervisor for the CSX Transportation Company after 43 years of service, and he was Vice President of Bachman Transfer and Storage Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and he attended the LaSalle High School. Mr. Zapf was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council #586, Cumberland Outdoor Club, and Cumberland Eagles. He also was a former Youth League Coach.

Surviving are four sons, William E. Zapf Jr., Edward L. Zapf and wife, Pamela; James C. Zapf, Alan P. Zapf, all of Cumberland; two daughters, Doris J. Baker and husband, Larry, LaVale, Patricia A. Bowser and husband, David, Cumberland; one brother, George Zapf and wife, Dorothy, Baltimore; eight grandchildren, William E. Zapf III, Arlington, Va., Allison K. Zapf, Frostburg, Bridgid A. Zapf, Lauren S. Zapf, Edward L. Zapf Jr., Brennan P. Zapf, Toyna McMannis, all of Cumberland, Mellissa Tomlinson, McConnellsburg, Pa.; and two great-grandsons, Patrick and Damon.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 9 p.m. on Monday, with the members of the Knights of Columbus participating.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
