from rhe Edna (KS) Sun, September 6, 1945:
"Alice Metzen Passes Away - The death of Alice Metzen, although not unexpected, brought sadness to all who were privileged to know her. She had been a patient sufferer for several months and had been critically ill for several weeks. Mrs. Metzen was a devout Christian mother and a friend to everyone. She had suffered much but was uncomplaining. She had kind words for everyone and seemed to be in sympathy with everyone who had sorrow, grief, or trouble, accepting her own with bravery and courage. Mrs. Metzen became a Christian at an early age. She joined the Sunshine Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma July 23, 1915, later transferring her membership to the local Baptist church. She loved to attend church and did so as long as her health permitted. The church was filled at the funeral hour, and almost as many people stood on the outside during the service. It was one of the largest funerals ever held at the Baptist Church here. Ruth Alice Cooper was born in Coopersville, Kentucky, Feb. 17, 1875, and departed this life Sept. 1, 1945, at the home of her daughter, Ruth Montgomery in Kansas City at the age of 70 years, 6 months, 14 days. Born to John and Julia Cooper, she moved to Kansas with her parents in 1887, settling in the Edna vicinity and has lived here since. She was married to Theodore W. Metzen on Nov. 27, 1899 at Independence, Kan. Mr. Metzen passed away Jan. 10, 1923. Survivors include four sons, Leonard and T.W. of Welch, Okla., John and Leo of Kansas City, Kan., four daughters, Julia Ruth Montgomery and Lena Dixon of Kansas City, Kan., one brother, S.F. Cooper of Edna, two sisters, Emma Rhodes and Belle Koger, Edna, 11 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. One brother passed away in infancy. She was converted at the age of 13 years and has lived a Christian life since. She was a member of Edna Baptist Church and was a true and loving mother to the last. All her children were at her bedside when the end came. Funeral services were conducted at Edna Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. V.F. Cloniger of the Bartlesville Baptist Church assisted by Rev. D.M. Fruits, local pastor. She was laid to rest in the family lot in Lake Creek Union Cemetery. Goodwin Funeral Home was in charge. Pallbearers included A.B. Hancock, Roy Apperson, J.H. Noble, Herb Mayfield, Woodrow Burnett, and Bruce Ingram."
