Walter Lockhart and Jane Otty's lives began in Virginia. They were married March 8th, 1814, in Rockbridge County Virginia.
Walter served in the War of 1812 as a private in a company of Infantry, commanded by Captain James Rowland, detached from the 48th Regiment V.M., and attached to the 4th Regiment V.M., commanded by Lieut. Colonel Elisha Boyd. He was drafted into service at the city of Fincastle, county of Botetourt, in the state of Virginia on or about the 2nd day of May 1814, and was sent to Norfolk Virginia to fight the British.(Note: This was a little less than 2 months after being married). His term of service was for 3 months and he was Honorably Discharged at Norfolk Va. the 2nd day of August 1814, with certificate.
The couple had 2 children in the state of Virginia, whom were Evans Otty Lockhart born October 11, 1814, and Elizabeth Ann Lockhart born February 7, 1817.
Walter and Jane then bought property in Washington County Indiana on or about the 23rd day of November 1818. Records also indicate that Walter and Jane had owned 80 acres of land (more or less) in Clark county Indiana (adjacent to Washington county Indiana), and sold the property to Fredrick Wyman on the 7th of August 1830.
In the state of Indiana they had an additional 3 children, Thomas Lockhart born October 11th 1819, John Lewis Lockhart born September 25th 1821, and Walter Otty Lockhart born October 1st 1825.
Sometime during June 1840, Walter, Jane, and 3 sons Thomas, John, and Walter Otty moved to Gasconade county Missouri where Walter had once again bought land. Here he stayed until his death in June 1856. However, Walter had traveled halve the United States during his life time, from Virginia to Missouri, and Walter's descendents have continued his desire for "what is beyond", for they have also had their journeys and have settled in Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, and Alaska.
