Ishmael made 5 trips on sailing vessels between Wales & the United States, 1 of which was to Ohio in 1843, when he was 18. During his travels he acquired a gold mine in the Sierra Mtns of CA. Ishmael and his brother William, appear in the 1860 census; they are miners and share a residence with James Riley, E.A. Quick, and Thos Nott. Ishmael had a childhood sweetheart who tired of waiting for him & married another. Wanting a bride to accompany him to the United States, Ishmael married Sophia Parry at the home of her mother on 20 Jan 1865, Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire, Wales. The couple left Wales on January 26, 1865, sailing around Cape Horn, South America to San Francisco, California. They continued on to his gold mine on the Bear River in Placer County. They settled in Little York, California on March 10, 1865 (Little York no longer exists but is near the present day Alta).

"Ishmael was not prepared for a new bride & when they arrived in California, Sophia had no dishes or even a cup for tea. Sophia's sister-in-law (Aunt Sophie) sent dishes to her. The 1870 census states Ishmael is a P Miner with real estate valued at $200 and a personal estate valued at $100. He and Sophia have 2 children, Elizabeth A. (Elizabeth Hannah) 4, and Alberta 9 months old (their son Albert had died the previous year). After Ishmael was injured in the mines, they took in boarders (Sophia cooking meals) for extra money. Little York burned to the ground and was never rebuilt.

The family moved across the Bear River to Dutch Flat. After Sophia's death, Ishmael gave out the youngest child, Grace, for adoption & moved with the older children to Dayton, Washington to farm. Ishmael is listed on the 1900 Census for Harmony Precinct, Columbia County, Washington, dwelling 9, dated June 23, 1920. His date of birth is stated as Jan 1825; he is head of household, owns his home free of mortgage; he is a widower and can read and write. His birthplace is Wales as is that of his parents; he emigrated in 1849 and is naturalized. His occupation is listed as wood chopper.
