A native of Winfall, N.C., he was a Navy veteran of World War I. He was the husband of Mrs. Edna Elizabeth Clarke Mathias.
Besides his widow, surviving are six daughters, Mrs. John Feldner, Mrs. Merriel Holcombe, Mrs. Phillip Lewis, Mrs. James Ellis, and Mrs. Willie Ray Rose of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Alva Perry of Nansemond; and three sons, Mahlon E. Mathias and Marshall Mathias of Portsmouth, and Edward Mathias of Nansemond.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. O. R. Hardy. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth.
