In addition, Boe co-founded the New York Islanders of the NHL in 1972. Born Roy Lars Magnus Boe, he was educated at Yale University and had a successful career in the clothing industry before purchasing the Nets in 1969. After the ABA folded in 1976, Boe was forced to sell Julius Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers in order to pay for the Net's entry fee into the NBA. Erving would go on to become a sports icon in Philadelphia. In 1978, one year after moving the team to New Jersey, Boe sold the club. He also sold his percentage of the Islanders that same year. He died from heart failure.
