According to Sons of Union Veterans, James' name was also spelled Cousins. He was a Union private in the American Civil War, 2nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company D. Enlisted 21 Jan 1864, discharged 12 Jul 1865. His grave is listed in lot 3, section 12, GAR post 35, Dept. Nebraska.

Civil War Veteran Dead (Special Submission to the Star). Beatrice, Neb., Feb. 24--James Cousins, an old resident of this section of the state, died at his home in De Witt Thursday night. He was a veteran of the civil war. He was 77 years of age. The body was brought to Beatrice for burial.
