Deceased Name: Helen Hasty
Helen McConnell Hasty, a retired educator and administrator for the Mobile County Public School System, died Friday at her home. She was 86.
A native of Theodore, Hasty was a resident of Grand Bay.
She began her career as a teacher at Alba School in Bayou La Batre and went on to teach at the elementary and high school levels in Theodore and moved on to Old Shell Elementary School. She also served as librarian at K.J. Clark Junior High School and principal of Orchard Elementary School.
She was named personnel assistant for the school board, then served as coordinator of the federal Title I Instructional Program before retiring.
After leaving the school system, Hasty worked as a consultant for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corp.
A graduate of Theodore High School, she received her bachelor's degree from Livingston State Teacher's College, now known as the University of West Alabama. She received her master's degree from the University of Alabama.
She was chairwoman of the Junior High School Library Committee, president of the local and state Classroom Associations, president of the Mobile chapter of the Alabama Education Association, and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the Mobile Retired Teachers Association and the Alabama Retired Teachers Association.
She was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Eloise Moore of Mobile; and one brother, Ben McConnell of Grand Bay.
Visitation will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Three Notch Road on Monday from 10 a.m. until the noon graveside service in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
