ROBERT J. MATSON, 89

During the early morning hours of Friday, May 26, 2006, Robert James Matson of Alba died quietly at Troy Community Hospital. He was 89 years of age.

Born March 18, 1917 in the Tioga County hamlet of Leolyn, he was the son of Leon and Daisy (Tubman) Matson.

As a young man, Mr. Matson was introduced by friends to Irene Biddle of Canton. A beautiful romance developed and they were wed on Oct. 20, 1940. Together they raised a son and daughter and shared nearly 66 years.

Mr. Matson answered our country's call to arms by serving in the US Army. He served as a small boat operator with the 345th Harbor Craft Company in the Rhineland.

After the war he was employed as a truck driver for GLF, and later Agway, retiring in the mid-1980s. Mr. Matson loved being busy. In addition to his truck driving job, he operated a full-time poultry business, supplying eggs and fryers to markets in New York. He was well-liked by everyone who knew him and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.

He was a member of the Canton VFW Post No. 714. He also was a man of great faith and was a member of the Alba Christian Church, where he served as deacon and trustee for more years than most people can remember. He had also served as treasurer of Alba Borough.

Among the member of his family he will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a kind, quiet man with a wry sense of humor, who never raised his voice or his hand.

Mr. Matson is survived by his wife, Irene, at home; his son, Gordon (and Cindy) Matson of Alba; daughter; Elaine Matson, at home; sister, Linda (and Charles) Thomas of Ridley Park, Pa; sisters-in-law, Johan Matson of Canton, Evelyn Matson of Canton RR 2 and Ida Smith of Gillett; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Wesley, John and Laurence Matson and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Matson.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 29, at Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Inc., 40 N. Center St., Canton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Tom Blackall and the Rev. David B. Morris officiating. Interment will follow in Alba Cemetery. Canton VFW Post No. 714 will accord military honors.
