Leon J. Matson was born 17 Dec 1896 in Leolyn, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, the eldest of 5 children born to John Leon and Daisy Rosalie Woodward Matson. At age 20, he married Daisy Belle Tubman, 5 years his senior. The couple raised 4 sons, all of whom became World War II veterans:

Wesley Dean "Todd" Matson (1918-1972), m. Phyllis Lena "Posie" June

Lawrence Elwin Matson (1920-1997), m. Johan Amelia Swartz

John Lewis Matson (1921-1999), m. Hazel Evelyn Kilmer

Following Daisy's death, Leon married a cousin, Evelyn Mae Andrus (Leon's grandmother Henrietta Andrus Matson and Evelyn's grandfather James Calvin Andrus were siblings). Leon and Evelyn had one daughter, Linda Diane, born in 1953.

Leon, who lived all his life in the Leolyn-Canton-Alba area, died of heart failure on Christmas Eve 1963. He was buried in Turner Cemetery alongside his first wife, Daisy Belle.
