Schoolgirl Killed on Early Morning Auto Jaunt With Father

Dad and Sister Slightly Injuried, But Helen Belch, 10, Becomes Year's 55th Vicitm; Woman Driver of Other Car Released

An early morning lark--an automobile ride with "daddy" before the school bus came--ended in sudden, tragic death at 7:45 a.m., today for 10-year-old Helen Belch, 3694 Clifton Ave..
Helen, dark-haired Clearview school pupil, was hurled to the wet street on her head and killed almost instantly when her father's automobile figured in a two-car collision at Vine-av and E. 31st-st.. She was Lorain-co's 55th traffic victim of 1937.
Her father's care overturned onto it's top and ironically, Helen, the only one hurled from the car, was one who sustained more than slight injuries.
The father, Fred Belch, 36, steel worker, and another daughter, Flora, 12, were treated at St. Joseph's hospital, then released.
Police said Belch was driving south on Vine-av., a thru street, when his car collided with that of Mrs. Lucy Gerace, 25, 1503, Reid-av, who was traveling east on 31st-st.
Altho police reports on the case were not complete, Police Cheif Theodore Walker said that Mrs. Gerace had given police a statement in which she said she made no saftey stop at the interection. Walker said 31st-st is a stop street for vine-av..
After Mrs. Gerace gave police a complete statement on the accident, she was released. Walker and Prosecutor Austin W. O"Toole said they were undecided whether police charges would grow out of the investigation, but that evidence in the case will probably be submitted to the next grand jury.
According to Lieut. William A. Murphy's preliminary report to Walker. Mrs. Gerace was traveling about 25 miles an hour when she came into the intersection going east, and saw the southbound car, the cheif stated.
She immediately applied her bakes, and swerved to the right, skidding, so that Belch's car struck hers at an angle and overturned. Mrs. Gerace's car continued skidding, until it struck a parked car at Vine-av crub, Walker said.
Belch's car overturned , landing on its top, and Helen was thrown approximately 20 feet, according to police estimates. Taken to the hospital by witnesses, Paul Dobros, 1610 E. 32nd-st, and Alex Pesti, 2934 Vine-av, she was found dead on arrival, according to hospital attendants.
Dr. S.C. Ward said death was caused by skull fracture,
Belch was enroute to his home from the national Tube Co., where he had gone to obtain his pay envelope, officials said. Mrs. Greace, accompanied by one passanger, Nina Recupero, 210 15th-st, was on her way to work at the Weitz Clothing Co., she said. She told police she had only been taking the route for about two weeks, and did not know the intersection was a stop steet.
Helen was a well liked pupil in the 7th grade at Clearview school, and often participated in school entertainments and plays, according to her teacher, Miss Velma Fisher.
Besides her father and sister, Flora, Helen is survived by her sister, Esther, nine years old, and a brother, Fred, seven, her mother and her grandmother, Mrs. Fonciana Orozco, Lorain.
The body was taken to the Mathews funeral home, and will be brought to the residence tomorrow morning. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m., at the home, and 9 a.m. at St. John's Catholic church, with Rev. Fr. Ambrose Metzger, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
