The son of Daniel & Sarah (Todd) Gilbert, he married Betty Potter on April 26, 1759 in New Haven, Conn.

History of Hamden, Conn., p. 200-201 Michael Gilbert was on the muster roll of the 17th Military Co. in the 2nd Reg. of Militia as a private. He was killed in action when the Britsh forces under Gen. Tryon invaded New Haven on July 5, 1779. His brother, Capt. John Gilbert was also killed.
