Harry was born in Lithuania/Poland to Gertrude and David, the sixth of nine children. The Sandlovich family immigrated to America, settling in Lincoln, Nebraska. Harry worked with his brothers, then moved to Minnesota where he got involved in "shady dealings" on the wrong side of the law. He married Rita Bundy who also enjoyed this lifestyle. They were never able to have children. Harry's parents disassociated themselves from him but he stayed in touch with his brothers. He changed his last name from Sandlovich to "Sawyer."

As an underworld gangster Harry was part of the Karpis-Barker gang and received a life sentence at Alcatraz for his part in the Edward Bremer kidnapping. While in prison Rita divorced him. He was released at the end of his life, perhaps due to illness, and passed away from cancer in a Chicago hospital. His brothers had him buried. His home, the "Harry Sawyer House" is a St. Paul landmark.
