On 25 Jan 1887, Levi Ewell (B: Sep 1865, Accomack County, Virginia) enlisted with Company K of the 10th Cavalry in Baltimore, Maryland. He was described as 5 feet 8 inches, black eyes, black hair, black complexion, and a laborer. On 16 May 1887, he passed away as a Private at Fort Grant, Arizona Territory from acute pneumonia (US Army Enlistments). The 10th Cavalry was a segregated unit of African-American soldiers that came to be known as "Buffalo Soldiers" and they were involved with the Indian Wars of the south west during Levi's service.

Private Levi Ewell was originally interred in the Fort Grant Cemetery in Arizona Territory; Plot 2-49 (Fort Grant Burial Register).
