Henry was the seventh of nine children of Isaac Wesley Alderman and his wife Harriet Barney Young. His two oldest siblings were born in Michigan City, Indiana while he and all of his other siblings were born in Tillamook, Tillamook County, Oregon.

Henry met his wife Edith May Kelty when he went to Lafayette, Yamhill County, Oregon, to finish school and to work in a store owned by the Bird family who were next door neighbors to the Keltys. Henry's oldest sister Mollie was married to Robert Phelps Bird whose father John owned the store. John became Henry Alderman's stepfather when he married Henry's widowed mother in 1882.

Henry Alderman and Edith Kelty were married in Lafayette on July 15, 1891 at 6 pm. Edith was the daughter of James Monroe and Sarah Maria (Scott) Kelty. Edith's maternal grandparents were John Tucker and Ann (Roelofson) Scott who were the parents of twelve children including long time Oregonian Editor Harvey Scott and Oregon's well known suffragette Abigail (Scott) Duniway.

When John Bird died his oldest son Robert ran the family store followed by his sons Guy and Dick Bird. Henry worked at the store until 1894 when he moved his family, which by then included daughter Pauline born January 13, 1893, to Tillamook.

Henry was elected Sheriff of Tillamook County and served in that capacity until his death in 1904.

The facts surrounding Henry's decision to take his own life may never be fully understood. Family lore includes: accusations of embezzlement against him which proved to be false; a US Senator who conspired with a governor's son and others, in a land fraud scheme; and Henry's severe headaches that may have left him unable to stand the pressure which he must have felt. Henry died 8 days after his daughter's 11th birthday and four months, to the day, before his son Henry Haines Alderman II was born.
