Charles Wallace Atkinson born 1915 ,2nd son of Edward S.(Ted) Atkinson, II , an Civil Engineer since 1909.and Mabel C. Mount. Attended Marion Military Institute, and US Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland.He joined the US Navy Air Force in 1941 right after Pearl Harbor. He completed flight training at Pensacola Florida.Attained rank of Lt Commander as executive officer of Utility Squadron Five which was engaged in providing large radio controlled drone aircraft and experimental equipment in the field. Three years in active wartime Flying large seaplanes .
In 1945 he married Lena Eloise Gage At the home of her parents ,in Port Gibson ,Ms.
He also flew very large Seaplanes which were used for submarine bombers,mostly in the Pacific theatre..One of these submarine bombers in 1943, crashed in the Bermuda triangle with 7 crew after losing all power and radio.Only one float was not broken off . after 45 min and 4 red Verys flares they were rescued by coast guard,and towed into San Juan Harbor .
After mustering out of Navy Charlie finished his Civil engineering Degree at Texas A&M.Charlie Atkinson did the preliminary surveys for Addicks & Barker dams in Harris county.He was engineer on Shell Chemical Butadiene plant in Deer Park Texas. He also designed transmission towers sub stations and transformer vaults for HL&P..Surveyed and planned from development til completion the subsdivisions of : Pine Wood Estates, Meadow Lea Annex,,Riverside Terrace Annex , Briar Hollow ,Addicks Dam Sub.,Plum Creek Terrace ,and Clinton Terrace ,all in the city of Houston Texas. Shortly before his death He had a contract with Joseph Meyers JR. to Develop Subdivisions in Meyerland area starting with Willow Meadows. Charlie was father of Leah Virginia Atkinson Doyle & Caroline Claire Atkinson Johnson (deceased 2006). They lived in Bellaire Texas .His Great Grandfather Charles Arden Russell was commisioned by Sam Houston to survey the Texas frontier in 1840s . His father Ted taught him engineering at an early age along with his brother Robert . He was killed at age 37 by a drunk driver who admitted it was on purpose, while surveying Almeda rd. "MURDER BY AUTO "was the headlines of the Houston Chronicle , an unheard of thing in 1952. His funeral was well attended by Ben Taub, Squatty Lyons and many other prominent Houstonians friends of his well known father Ted Atkinson. Charlie has 2 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews ,some who carry his name.We miss you daddy everyday.See you again soon,Love Leah
