Supervisor Of City's Signal
System For 11 Years Was
Expert On Devices.
August Dommer, 64, one of Canton's veteran electricians and for the last 11 years in charge of traffic signal light maintenance for the city, died Thursday night in his home at 1001 Harrison ave. SW after a brief illness.
Mr. Dommer came to Canton 47 years ago from Zoar. He entered the electrical trade and for a short time was a partner in the Dommer-Walters Electric Co. He later was named chief electrician at the Canton Sheet Steel Co. and then served in a similar capacity at the Thomas-Smith Co. Mr. Dommer assisted in designing the first signal traffic light that was installed on the square. Eleven years ago he was placed in charge of the city traffic light system. He looked after this work personally and frequesntly was called out of bed at night to make repairs in various parts of the city.
He also inspected the system at regular intervals and when not busy on repair work would tour the city to see that all lights were functioning properly.
Mr. Dommer saw service during the Spanish American War and was a past commander of Canton camp, United Spanish War Veterans. He was also a member of First Christian Church.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Buchtel Dommer; four children, William and Dorothy of the home, John of Canton, and Mrs. John (Mary) Naegeli of Louisville; a half brother, C. A. Kuehn of Canton, and two grandchildren.
