In 1854, she, along with her mother Friederika, and brothers Henry and Frederick, emigrated to the United States. They first settled in Dundee Township, Kane County, Illinois. Sophia married Ernst Serfling, on July 26, 1857, in that county. Soon after, they homesteaded in Fillmore County, Minnesota, where they farmed for about twenty years. Sophia and Ernst had ten children born in Minnesota, four of which died young.
In the late 1870's, the family moved to northern Thurston County, Washington, to farm, where they also kept a home in nearby Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington. Sophia and Ernst were divorced in 1892 and Ernst sold the farm and they each lived in their own home in Steilacoom until Sophia died and Ernst moved into the Old Soldiers' Home where he died
