Funeral Services For Crash Victims Held During Week

Funeral services for the three victims of the train - fire engine crash in Pascagoula Thursday were conducted during the week past. The third life claimed was that of O.D. Monroe (#54516573), 23, who died Friday shortly after noon at County Hospital.

Other dead were Hillary "Klein" Thornton, 52, assistant fire chief and Joseph O'Neil Williams (#37028292), 17, volunteer, all of Pascagoula. Jimmie Hudson (#41533886), fire chief, was hospitalized with injuries and suffering a heart attack after learning the fate of his crew was able to go home Saturday.

The accident occurred when the north bound Hummingbird L&N crack passenger train struck the city's new $16, 000 fire truck which was answering a fire alarm at Witchen Brothers Cleaners on Telephone Rd. Thornton was driving. Williams was killed almost instantly and Thornton died almost 30 minutes later at County Hospital.

FUNERAL Services for the assistant chief were conducted Thursday (04/24) morning from Fails chapel with the Rev. Charles McKay, pastor of First Baptist church of Pascagoula, and the Rev. N. B. Saucier officiating.

Interment was in Machpelah cemetery. Pall Bearers were Wilbur Dees, Henry J. Bogdahn, Joe Krebs, Frank Canty, McVeigh Bowman and R. C. Rayborn. Honoray pall bearers were fire chief Jimmie Hudson, Charles Gray, A. R. Crane, Johnie Gentile, Joe Truett, Sam Kilson, S. M. Holifield, Lewis Perez, Nello Ros, T. T. Justice, Ed Wiggins, Andrew Hood, Foster Barrow, Curtis Holifield, Jimmy L. Findley, W. D. Keenum and A. M. Brondum.

He was a native of Athens, Ga., but he made his home in Pascagoula since 1922. He had been a member of the fire department a number of years. A veteran of the World War, he was a member of the VFW and First Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Maude (Burns) Thornton: a son: Sgt. H. K. Thornton, serving with the 4th division in Hanau, Germany, two brothers, William J. Thornton, Birmingham, Asa C. Thornton, Jacksonville: a step brother; Jesse Tolbert, Danielsville, Ga., and two step sisters: Mesdames J. W. Bird, Athens, and Maude Meadows, Cordele, Ga.

A group of Moss Point Volunteer firemen brought the Moss Point engine down and took over the Pascagoula fire department Thursday morning while Pascagoula fireman attended services for the assistant
chief.
