Funeral of Fielding Lewis in St. Matthew's Cathedral

Remains Arrived There Tuesday Afternoon and Funeral Held the Next Forenoon

Will Clayton returned Tuesday afternoon from Washington, where he went with the remains of the late Fielding Lewis. W. P. Freema will not return until Friday. The Pennsylvania train was held for half an hour at St. Louis Monday, enabling the funeral party to make close connections. They arrived in Washington Tuesday at 10 o'clock and the body was taken to the home of Mrs. Elliott, mother of Mr. Lewis' wife, where a short service was held at 8:30 the next morning. Later the full Catholic service was held, with full choir at St. Matthew's cathedral. the Washington Post says concerning the funeral and Mr. Lewis: The funeral of Fielding Lewis, whose remains were brought here from Oklahoma, where he died Thursday last, took place this morning from St. Matthew's Church. Interment was in Holy Rood cemetery. Rev. Father Buckey, asistant pastor of the church, assisted by Father Mallon, of St. Ann's church, Tenleytown, and Father Perrig of Fredricksburg, VA, conducted the funeral services. The pallbearers were Benjamin Minor, Dr. Charles Collins, Dr. Thomas Vincent, John Dean and Dubney Harrison, all of Washington; W. H.--H. Clayton, ___ and W. P. Freeman, of McAlester, Okla., representing the Knights of Columbus and the Order of Elks of McAlester, and Rounsby--P. Quesenbery? of King George county, VA. Mr. Lewis was born at Marmion in King George County, VA in 1866 and was forty two years of age. He received his eduation at St. John's Military academy at Alexandria, Georgetown University and the law school of the university. He was admitted to the bar of the District of Columbia about fifteen years ago. For a year or two, he was in the legal division of the state department. Resigning, he went to the new territory of Oklahoma and settled in McAlester in 1893. He was elected to several public offices, and for several years he was mayor of his adopted home. About three weeks ago, he was stricken with typhoid fever and last Thursday afternoon passed away. The funeral of Mr. Lewis at McAlester took place from St. John's Catholic church Sunday afternoon last and the services were attended by a large assembly of citizens. Mr. Lewis married Miss Lydia Elliott of this city, who died three years after her marriage. A little daughter, Nellie, now eleven years of age, survives her parents. She is attending school in this city. Mr. Lewis was a descendant of the Washington family, his maternal ancestor having been Bettie Lewis, a sister of Gen. George Washington.
