John Haslett was born about 1788 in either Allen Twp, Northampton County, PA or Derry Twp, Northumberland County, PA. (The exact date of his parents' move from Northampton County to Northumberland County is not yet known, but they were in Northumberland by sometime in 1789.)

John was the son of William Haslett, Esq. and his wife, Margaret McFadden.

John married Leatitia Dunlap on March 26, 1817 at the Doylestown Presbyterian Church, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They lived in Derry Township, Northumberland Co., later Columbia Co., PA until 1834 when they located near Leatitia's family in Bucks County, PA.

In April, 1837 they left Pennsylvania with their family and previous Columbia County, PA neighbors and friends and moved West by covered wagon to St. Joseph County, Indiana. John died during their first year in Indiana.

John and Leatitia Dunlap Haslett had seven known children. Two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Lydia are buried next to them. Their son, William Haslett, moved to Berrien Co., Michigan. Son, Andrew Dunlap Haslett lived most of his adult life in St. Paul, MN. Daughters Margaretta (m. George Bennett), Mary B. (unmarried) and Phoebe Jane (married Terry Mays) moved to Iowa, where the first two mentioned are buried. Phoebe Jane later moved with her family to Los Angeles, CA, where she is buried.

Many others who are buried in the Harris Prairie Cemetery were also pioneers with the John Haslett family from the Columbia County area of Pennsylvania.
